Life at Thornlie Senior High School

Year 7 to 10 students have access to a range of programs including a rugby specialist program, netball, information technology and academic excellence. Students may also enjoy the opportunities offered in cheer and dance program, Japanese, AUSLAN, music, art, and numerous sports programs. 

Year 11 and 12 courses available provide a foundation for students to progress to university, training, or the workplace at the end of their secondary education. The school’s tertiary entrance (ATAR) courses are well supported by local universities and combined with outstanding Vocational Education & Training (VET), general studies courses and the Year 10 to 12 Big Picture Academy ensure our students are well prepared for life beyond high school. 
 
The school is also an accredited Registered Training Organisation (RTO) that can deliver and assess nationally recognised training and qualifications in VET courses. 

Support for students

Thornlie Senior High School’s student services team collaborate with all staff, students, families and outside support agencies to assist students. The team centres their efforts on key priorities, they are dedicated to fostering a culture of positive student behaviour, improve student attendance, provide essential support for student mental health, and offer robust academic support to students, ensuring they have the resources and assistance needed to excel in their studies. They implement positive school programs such as the Student of the Month, Attendance Champions, and a House Point System. 

The student services team consists of a deputy principal - student welfare, a manager of student services, year coordinators, school psychologists, AIEO, school officers and community health nurse.

Settling in 

There is a strong emphasis placed on the pastoral care needs of the international students. The school recognises that homesickness and cultural changes can be difficult for students to manage. The students are supported by a deputy principal, an international student coordinator and experienced caring teachers. A special orientation and pastoral care program enable students to develop friendships with each other as well as local students. This helps them to feel welcome within the school community. 

International students have additional support through the international student coordinator, who provides supporting services, including individual education plans, comprehensive career guidance and English language support for students. This person works as an advocate, helping international students voice their concerns and opinions as well as organising events and activities.
