English language support

Students in the early stages of learning the English language can access Intensive English Centres or receive additional English language support.

Intensive English centres

Some international students choose to enrol at an intensive English centre (IEC) before they start their school courses. IEC's are run by specialist teachers, who help students develop their English language skills.

Intensive English centres provide an integrated 12-month English language program to eligible students who are in the early stages of English language learning. Learning programs deliver the whole Western Australian Curriculum, not just English language classes. Programs are tailored to each student’s needs, which helps them smoothly transition into mainstream classes.

IEC's operate within some mainstream schools. This means students can engage with the wider school community, including excursions, sporting carnivals and assemblies. Classes are supportive environments where students are encouraged to learn and grow. Classes are also small to promote individualised learning.

English as a second language

English as an additional language (EALD) specialist support is provided at selected schools for students who have either moved from Intensive English Centres to mainstream schooling or students who require English language support to assist with their studies.
